Matrix Keypad - Functionality & Connection Overview

 

A 4x4 matrix keypad operates using a structured combination of four rows and four columns, providing efficient button state detection for microcontrollers and host devices. Each key contains an embedded push-button switch, where one terminal is connected to a row and the other to a column.

How It Works ?

 

  • The microcontroller scans the keypad by sequentially pulling each of the four column pins (1-4) HIGH or LOW while monitoring the state of the four row pins (5-8).
  • When a key is pressed, it completes a circuit between a specific row and column, enabling the microcontroller to identify the exact key pressed. This method ensures an efficient, low-power, and interference-free way to register key inputs.
